Not every coupon site is checking what it publishes. Some exist purely to collect ad clicks or harvest your email and card details behind a fake "unlock this code" wall. Here's what to look for.
The code never actually shows
A common pattern: you click "reveal code," and instead of a code, you're asked to complete a survey, install an app, or enter your email before anything appears. Legitimate coupon codes don't need to be "unlocked" through a task — if a site gates the code behind an action unrelated to the store, treat it as a red flag.
No indication of when it was checked
If a site shows a code with no date, no status, and no way to tell whether it's still working, you're trusting the code blind. Look for a visible last-checked timestamp or a pass/fail status — sites that don't show this usually aren't checking at all.
Countdown timers that reset
Fake urgency — a countdown that says "expires in 10 minutes" but resets every time you reload the page — is a manipulation tactic, not a real deadline. Genuine promotions have real expiry dates set by the merchant, not by the coupon site.
It asks for payment info before you leave the site
A coupon site should only ever send you to the merchant's own checkout to enter payment details. If a "deals" site asks for your card number directly to "activate" a discount, that's not a coupon — stop immediately.
Codes that never go stale
Real promotions expire. If every code on a site has been "active" for months with no updates, it's very likely a static list that was scraped once and never rechecked — meaning a large share of it is probably already dead.
