How to Use a Coupon Code at Checkout

4 min read · Editorial team · September 16, 2026

Applying a coupon code sounds simple, but a surprising number of "broken" codes are actually just entered wrong, or applied at the wrong step. Here's the process that works on nearly every checkout.

1. Add your items to the cart first

Most stores only reveal the promo code field once you reach the cart or checkout page — you generally can't apply a code from a product page. Add everything you want to buy before looking for the field.

2. Find the right field

Look for a link or field labeled "Promo code," "Discount code," "Coupon," or "Gift card & promo code." On some sites it's collapsed behind a small "+ Add code" link rather than shown as an open text box, so scroll the order summary carefully before assuming there isn't one.

3. Copy the code exactly

Coupon codes are case-sensitive on some platforms and contain no spaces. Use the "Get code" button on the offer instead of retyping it by hand — it copies the exact string to your clipboard, avoiding a stray space or a mistyped character.

4. Apply it before entering payment details

Enter the code and press "Apply" (not just Enter, on some checkouts) before you move on to payment. If you enter payment info first, some checkouts lock the order summary and won't let a new code recalculate the total.

5. Confirm the discount actually shows

Don't assume it worked — look at the order summary. A valid code will show a new line item like "Promo discount: -$12.00" or an updated total. If nothing changes and there's no error message either, the code silently failed to apply.

6. Check for exclusions

If a code rejects your order, check for a minimum spend, excluded categories (often sale items or gift cards), or a note that it's for first-time customers only. These are usually shown in a small line under the promo field or on the offer page.

If a code you copied from YallReviews doesn't apply, refresh the offer page — every code is re-tested every 24 hours, and a failed code gets stamped VOID as soon as we catch it.
